Ecotricity converts second-hand Lotus Exige to make Britain's first electric supercar

An eco-nerd from Gloucestershire, Dale Vince, who also owns wind energy company Ecotricity has built himself Britain’s first electric supercar. Dubbed the Nemesis, the total cost on building this car is nearly £1million. And what’s so unique? Nemisis is powered by 330bhp engine and can race from a standstill to 100mph in a stunning 8.5 seconds, which is faster than V12 Ferrari. The first road-going British built electric supercar is the result of acumen from a team of engineers who had been involved in various iconic British vehicles including the McLaren F1 supercar and DeLorean.

Before the machine was crowned as Britain’s first road going electric supercar, there is a lot of story behind. Nemesis has been built on a second-hand Lotus Exige bought off eBay. Engineers fitted therein 96 lithium-ion polymer cells, a completely new transmission, two motors developing 330bhp, lowered and shifted the centre of gravity forward and lengthened the chassis by 90mm to finally convert it into a green machine capable of giving cold to the spines of many fastest combustion engined supercars.
The vehicle is powered by 100% green electricity made by Ecotricity’s UK network of 51 windmills and has so far has achieved a top speed of 135mph. However, Ecotricity aims to make it touch 170mph mark which is intended to break the record of the 139mph record for an electric British car currently held by Don Wales in the Bluebird Electric. Nemesis can run somewhere between 100mph and 150mph. It can be charged from empty to full in less than two hours from its fast charger or eight to nine hours from a regular mains supply.
Nevertheless, there are no plans as of now to put Nemesis into production and Ecotricity says the technology developed for the Nemesis will be incorporated into its next projects - a 250mph-plus wind-powered electric supercar, and an electric tractor.
